About
Welcome to Barraca da Chiquita Restaurante, a vibrant culinary gem nestled along Avenida do Nordeste in the heart of São Cristóvão, Rio de Janeiro. This local favorite is more than just a restaurant; it’s an experience that invites you to explore the rich flavors of Brazilian cuisine. While the ambience may appear simple, with its colorful decorations echoing the spirit of the community, the menu tells a different story—one filled with passion and depth.
As you step into Barraca da Chiquita, you’re greeted with a lively atmosphere bustling with patrons eager to indulge in the delightful offerings. Customer reviews showcase a mixed bag of emotions, from the sheer joy brought on by their carne de sol to disappointment regarding certain dishes that strayed from their former glory. This juxtaposition paints a compelling picture: here, you may encounter both culinary triumphs and the occasional letdown.
One standout dish is the fish stew, which has garnered praise for its incredible flavors, a testament to the chef's craft. Although the wait for your meal may stretch to 20-30 minutes, many patrons, like Chalessy Darej, have found it worthwhile. Portions are generous, often enough to share—perfect for a cozy meal with a loved one. However, be prepared for a price point that some refer to as a bit pricey, reflecting the quality of ingredients and the traditional techniques employed in crafting these dishes.
Yet, it's essential to navigate through the customer sentiments that mention a decline in quality. The review from L H Silva-Clark (Tupinambah) highlights a significant drop in satisfaction, particularly regarding the beloved baiao de dois. This traditional dish, which once dazzled with its comforting combination of rice and beans accompanied by queijo coalho, appears to have lost some of its charm. Such feedback serves as a reminder that the culinary landscape can ebb and flow—yet, the presence of excellent dishes like their famed carne de sol stands as a beacon of hope amidst the turbulence.
Customer service at Barraca da Chiquita has been described as efficient yet chilly during peak hours, which might detract from your experience. After all, a warm meal should be paired with warm hospitality. Still, with such a prime location and a menu that invites you on a culinary journey, this restaurant remains worthy of a visit for those seeking to immerse themselves in the local food scene.
In summary, Barraca da Chiquita Restaurante offers a flavorful tapestry of Brazilian cuisine, reflecting both the vibrancy and challenges of local dining. Whether you savor the delightful fish stew or reminisce about what the baiao de dois used to be, this establishment invites all food lovers to sample its offerings—just be prepared for the occasional surprise.

“ "Caiu muito' it is the common expression to say this restaurant is no longer good. I used to go there and I had several pleasant experiences, it used to be tasty but at this time it was a deception, It was v unpleasant! Prices were v high and dishes were not ok. I ordered tge tradicional baiao de dois - modest rice and beans with queijo coalho which disappeared from their version. The waiter was laconic explaining in their version it does exist! It is a clear cooking fraude. The rice was not fresh nor tasty. These 3 stars are because the meat - carne de sol - was excellent. Mangaba juice was horrendous - water and sugar with a hint of mangaba and pricy 10 reais!!! Customer service was quick but cold the place was v busy and noisy. I won't recommend it. Please avoid ! ”
“ The place is easy to find, colorful decoration. Not a big place but it’s typically local restaurant. We ordered fish stew and sun dried beef. The taste are amazing. It takes time 20-30minutes till food is ready but it worth to wait. The price bit pricy but need to remember that 1 portion is enough for 2 person. ”
